Dirty water kills
The Vicious Cycle of Water Contamination and Disease
Poverty: Democratic Republic of Congo (DR Congo) is one of the poorest countries in the world. Lack of access to clean water and basic sanitation is closely linked to the extreme poverty and suffering that persists in the country, especially in rural areas.
Lack of infrastructure: The lack of access to clean drinking water sources forces people to rely on surface water from creeks and rivers which are often contaminated. Drinking unsafe water puts them at risk of fatal waterborne diseases such as diarrhea and cholera. Four out of five people in DR Congo lack access to adequate toilets and practice open defecation which spreads parasites and contaminates the same surface water sources used for drinking. So a vicious cycle continues, spreading deadly diseases.
Children under 5 years old are the most vulnerable: Rate of infant mortality is staggering in the Congo. As of 2020 it had the 4th highest under-five mortality rate in the world. Among the causes of death, many could be prevented with access to clean water and sanitation.
